Sewage spill prompts warnings at Kaneohe Bay
The health department has posted signs at Kaneohe Bay after 7,800 gallons of raw sewage overflowed two storm manholes Tuesday, and made its way into a storm drain leading to to the bay.
The spill occurred at 11:30 a.m. and was under control by 12:30 p.m., the city Department of Environmental Services reported. The affected area was cleaned, disinfected and deodorized.
The overflow occurred at the Ahuimanu Wastewater Pump Station in Windward Oahu while crews were repairing a pressurized main pipe that carries water, sewage and other materials. The pipe was accidentally activated and caused approximately 8,800 gallons of raw wastewater to be dumped into two manholes. About 7,800 gallons of sewage made its way to a storm drain that eventually leads to Kaneohe Bay.
The health department will collect water samples and monitor the situation at the bay.
