Grace Kashiwa of Manoa sat Thursday in the shade of a shower tree in Kapiolani Park to relax and read a romance novel, “The Guy Next Door,” by Missy Tippens. She was taking a “timeout” from her daily routine and sat to read and wait for her husband, George, to finish his exercise routine of walking around the park.

Honolulu rose to no. 37 on the 2016 list of the Top 100 U.S. cities in which to live, according to Livability.com.

The ranking represents a significant jump from its 58th-place rank on the 2015 list, but the change is not explained by researchers.

More than 2,100 cities with populations between 20,000 and 350,000 were evaluated by Livability.com and its partners.

The study analyzed 40 data points in categories including economics, housing, amenities, infrastructure, demographics, social and civic capital, education and health care.

The top five livable U.S. cities, according to this analysis, are, No. 1 Rochester, Minn.; No. 2. Bellevue, Wash.; 3. Madison, Wis.; 4. Santa Barbara, Calif., and at No. 5, Boulder, Colo.
