The University of Hawaii football script writers will get to work with a larger cast.

“Add ‘em to the pile, and let’s go see where they all fit,” offensive coordinator Don Bailey said of junior college transfers who just joined the Warriors.

Glendale College wideout Isaiah Bernard and Santa Monica College running back Melvin Davis and Dejaun Butler recently completed work to enroll at UH.

They arrived in town Monday, underwent physical examinations on Tuesday morning, then participated in the mid-day practice. Because of the NCAA’s acclimation rules, they were not allowed to wear pads during the workouts. Those restrictions will be lifted in a couple of days.

“Can they fit?” Bailey said. “Will they fit? That will be up to how fast they can learn and develop and grow. We’ll put our arm around them and welcome them in and let’s see where the chips fall.”

At 6 feet 2 and about 240 pounds, Davis can fill the powerback position vacated with the completion of Joey Iosefa’s eligibility.

“He’s got great size, and he’s very smooth,” Bailey said.

Running backs coach Wayne Moses said Davis gives the Rainbow Warriors another option in the backfield.

“We’ve got some big guys,” Moses said. “We’ve got some little guys. We’ve got some in-between guys. We’ve got some guys who are more power. We’ve got some guys who are more open space. It’s kind of nice to be able to change the flavor of the day.”

Bernard provides another option on the perimeter.

“He showed some speed,” quarterback Max Wittek said of Bernard. “I’m excited for that.”

While the Warriors have depth at receiver, coach Norm Chow said, “You can’t have enough good players. We need all the good players we can get. … You need to fill needs, but you also need to go after the best guys available.”

Butler is capable of playing cornerback, safety or nickelback.

“I watched his film, and that kid is a pretty dang good football player,” defensive coordinator Tom Mason said.

Abraham Elimimian, who coaches the defensive secondary, said: “It’s nice to have a guy like (Butler). I told him, like I told everybody else, ‘It’s the work that you put in on the field. That’s what impresses me.’ He brings another element.”

Chow said the three transfers were “heavily recruited” by other schools.

“A lot of schools didn’t have (available) scholarships toward the end,” said Chow, noting the Warriors reserved scholarships for late-qualifiers. “They all needed to finish their school work, and so far they’ve done it.”
