Castle Medical Center’s next Eat Well for Life class focuses on using fewer ingredients when cooking, which hopefully equals less time in the kitchen.
There will be samples for tasting, and recipes will be available to take home.
The class will be held 6 to 7:15 p.m. Aug. 27 in the Wellness Center. Cost is $10, and payment must be made by Tuesday. Limited seating. Register by calling 263-5400 or at castlemed.org.
Yearly Greekfest set for Aug. 29-30
Opa! The Greek Festival returns Aug. 29 and 30 to McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Park.
This means a weekend of spanakopita, gyros, moussaka, salads and more, to be washed down with ouzo, Greek beer or a variety of wines. New to the food lineup this year are Greek pizza and calamari.
Then, work off those calories by dancing to the sounds of Mythos or by meandering through the bazaar to pick up herbs, cheese, jewelry, clothing and other items to bring the culture home.
The fest runs noon to 9 p.m. both days. Admission is $3, free for children under 11. Active military personnel and their families also have free admission.
Green House teaches all about herbs
The Green House is holding a cooking class on making vegetarian pate and spreads with herbs, and a two-part class on identifying herbs and cultivating medicinal and edible plants.
Advance registration is required for both events. Call 524-8427, email info@thegreenhousehawaii.com or go to thegreenhousehawaii.com. The center is at 224 Pakohana St. in Pauoa Valley.
>> Cooking with Herbs from the Garden (11:45 a.m. Sept. 19 at the Green House center, $35): Vegetarian chef Alyssa Moreau will demonstrate how to make pates and spreads.
The day’s menu includes walnut mushroom pate with thyme, chickpea salad with green onions and dill, macadamia nut cheese with chives and tarragon, and sun-dried tomato basil cashew spread.
The spreads can be used in sandwiches and wraps or as dips.
>> Grow with Us Plant Walk and Beneficial Herb series (9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 19 and 26 at various locations, $50): The first class will be held at the Pali Lookout, where attendees will identify various plants and learn which ones have medicinal uses.
Participants should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and bring note-taking supplies.
The second class, to be held at the Green House center, will offer more uses for the herbs identified in the first class and how to cultivate some medicinal and edible plants.
