Emily Soares of Hilo captured the Girls’ 18 title at the United States Tennis Association National Selection Tournament with a 7-6 (3), 6-0 win over Abigail Chiu of Austin, Texas, on Monday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
The tournament is the highest level junior event hosted by the USTA Hawaii Pacific Section and Soares is the first Hawaii player to win the championship when held in the state. Soares was the third seed in the draw and won her first national title by outlasting Chiu in the first set and sweeping through the second.
“In the tiebreaker I was up and she started to miss,” Soares said. “I was able to get the first set and then she had an injury, so I just had to get every ball back and keep her moving.”
Jacob Brumm of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., won the Boys’ 18 title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Joseph Rotheram of Manhattan Beach, Calif.
Hilo’s Sawada tied for third
Hawaii Hilo golfer Kristen Sawada shot a 1-over 74 and is tied for third after Monday’s first round of the Western Washington Invite in Bellingham, Wash.
Sawada is three shots behind leader Jennifer Liedes of St. Martin’s. Hilo’s Andi Igawa opened with an 81, Shantel Antonio shot an 85 and Alison Tengan shot an 86 as the Vulcans are seventh in the team standings at 326.
Hawaii Pacific is in 10th place after a 331. The Sharks are led by Carly Farthing (80), Corinne Chann (82), Kaia Takaki (84) and Haley Hoag (85). Northeastern State leads the 12-team field at 304.
Chaminade men and women lose on road
The Chaminade men’s soccer team lost 2-0 at Point Loma Nazarene on Monday in San Diego.
Andrew Ritchie and Daniel ten Bosch scored for the Sea Lions (6-3-1, 5-1 PacWest), who outshot the Silverswords (0-9, 0-6) 19 to 12.
The Chaminade women also lost 2-0 at Point Loma Nazarene.
Easton Kawakami and Bella Diaz scored for the Sea Lions (8-3 , 5-1). Lauren Ishii made eight saves for the Silverswords (1-9, 0-6).
Chen and Johnson honored by PacWest
Brigham Young-Hawaii setter Michelle Chen and Chaminade middle blocker Reigna Johnson were honored by the PacWest on Monday.
Chen earned player of the week honors after averaging 10.17 assists during the Seasiders’ road trip. She had a near triple-double in a five-set win over Point Loma Nazarene with nine kills, 58 assists and 15 digs.
Johnson was named the league’s defender of the week. She posted 13 blocks as the Silverswords went 2-1 on the road.
