Pieper Toyama, former head of Pacific Buddhist Academy, will share his experience as a father and educator in a three-part course on parenting practices, inspired by Shin Buddhist values.
“Through many years of innovative educational experiences and parenting his own children, Toyama will help families understand themselves better and apply wisdom and compassion to everyday family issues,” a news release said. The course will also enable parents to meet others who share their concerns and perhaps learn from them.
The class will be held Oct. 6, 13 and 20 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin annex temple, 1727 Pali Highway, for $20 per person; tuition assistance and scholarships are available. Call 973-6555 to preregister.
Toyama, in addition to being emeritus head of school at PBA, where he served from 2003 to 2014, was headmaster of Parker School (1990-2002) and filled other teaching positions on Hawaii island. Currently he serves as president of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii (a statewide Shin Buddhist organization) and is a member of Jikoen Hongwanji Shin Buddhist temple.
