A California visitor died on Maui Friday after being found unresponsive on a snorkeling excursion.
Karen Ingrid Vinje, 71, of Pacific Palisades was on a Tera-lani Sailing Adventures catamaran tour to Honolua Bay when crew members found her floating in the water, Maui police said.
Police officers who were dispatched at 1:04 p.m. Friday to D.T. Flemings Beach said lifeguards using a watercraft brought Vinje to shore.
She was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation and transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she died, police said.
Pedestrian hit while crossing the street
A male pedestrian was critically injured when he was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Palama Street and Vineyard Boulevard on Friday evening.
The vehicle was traveling east when it struck the man at about 8:42 p.m. Friday, police said.
The man, believed to be in his 40s, was treated by paramedics and transported to a hospital.
Police said the man was not in a crosswalk when struck by the vehicle. Speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors for the driver, police said.
Kapena Falls, Manoa trail site of rescues
Honolulu Fire rescue workers went to Kapena Falls in Nuuanu to help a man who was injured in a fall.
Rescue workers who received the call at about 11:40 a.m. said the 24-year-old man fell about 30 feet near the falls.
Fire officials said the patient was treated and put into a rescue basket and a rope system was used to transport him to the top of the trail, where his care was transferred to city Emergency Medical Services workers.
Fire spokesman Capt. Kevin Mokulehua said the man was conscious while being treated.
Later Saturday, Honolulu firefighters airlifted a 55-year-old woman to safety after she injured an ankle while hiking along Manoa Falls Trail.
Sixteen Honolulu Fire Department rescue personnel responded to the 1:28 p.m. call.
Firefighters hiked in to meet the woman and assisted as she was airlifted to a landing zone at Manoa District Park.
Big Isle man charged in robbery, assault
A Hawaii island man has been charged with second-degree robbery after allegedly taking store merchandise and striking a store employee. Lance A. Ulep, 26, of Hilo was arrested and was being held at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center. His bail was set at $6,250.
A store employee said a man put merchandise into his backpack at a shopping center on Puainako Street and left the store without paying for it.
Police who responded to the call at 11:46 a.m. Wednesday said the suspect struck the employee in the head with his fist and then left on foot for another shopping center.
