A 24-year-old man died in a fall from a University of Hawaii dormitory early Sunday, apparently while trying to prevent another man from committing suicide.

Both the victim and the 19-year-old man he was trying to assist fell at around 2:05 a.m. from a ledge outside a Hale Wainani dormitory. Police did not specify the floor.

UH spokesman Dan Meisenzahl said neither man was enrolled at the university. He said the dormitory complex was relatively empty, with only a few transitional students and resident advisers occupying units during the summer.

The incident happened just hours before the dormitory’s scheduled move-out day began.

The condition of the 19-year-old man has not yet been confirmed.

Woman killed in early morning crash

A woman died in a fiery crash Sunday in Pearl City.

Police said the driver lost control shortly before 2 a.m. while heading north on Waihone Street, about 350 feet makai of Kamehameha Highway, then traveled off the roadway and down a 30-foot ravine. The vehicle caught fire and became engulfed in flames.

Police said speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors. The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.

Honolulu fire Capt. James Todd said about 15 firefighters put out the flames. The woman was found outside the car, Todd said.

It was the 32nd traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared with 38 at this time last year.

Ko Olina drowning victim identified

A 65-year-old man who died Saturday after an incident in the water at Ko Olina has been identified as Valentin Ventura of Waipahu.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Emergency Medical Services said Ventura was taken in critical condition to a hospital after an apparent near-drowning incident at Ko Olina Lagoon 4 at about 5 p.m.

Police have opened an unattended-death case.

Inmate remains missing

The Department of Public Safety continues to seek help finding inmate DeJohn Williams, who failed to return to the Laumaka Work Furlough Center after work Friday.

Williams, 43, was serving time for promotion of a dangerous drug. He is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
