Kulu Kulu has turned into a zoo, and not just because lines can get long at the Japanese bakery inside Shirokiya. Its signature cream puffs and pastries have been transformed into animals for August. The result is a treat that is almost too cute to eat. But after snapping some pictures for your Instagram account, grab your fork because these little critters are too tasty to set free.
My fave was Bunny Mocheese (cream cheese-filled mochi for $4.50). Other members of the menagerie: Chick Chick Puff (custard cream puff, $2.95), Matcha Gator (white chocolate and green tea cake, $4.50), Lion Roll (custard and chocolate cream-filled roll, $3.95) and Bear Puff (hazelnut cream-filled pastry, $2.95). They’re available on the first level of Shirokiya until Aug. 31, with a second location in Waikiki Eaton Square, 438 Hobron Lane. Visit kulukulucake.com.

Chocolate enhances joy of ginger
I have always liked ginger. During small-kid time I devoured the thin red strips made by Yick Lung. As I got older, I learned to chew on the crystallized form, which was yummy and good for my tummy. Recently I discovered the latest way to get my ginger fix: Next by Nature organic ginger encased in dark chocolate. The two flavors complement each other perfectly. The company notes there are no additives or preservatives. I found my 3-ounce bag at Don Quijote in Pearl City for $4.39.

Rock out to Elvis at the post office
When the U.S. Postal Service issued a stamp honoring Elvis Presley in 1993, it discovered he was still “The King”: It was one of the most popular issues of the year. Consider this new black-and-white Elvis stamp, released Wednesday as part of the Music Icons stamp series, as the long-awaited sequel. (Presley died Aug. 16, 1977, at age 42.) The Postal Service also released an exclusive companion CD of 18 Presley hits, “Elvis Presley Forever” ($9.99 at usps.com), with two previously unreleased recordings.
A sheet of the 16 “forever” stamps sells for $7.84 at post offices and online.

Serum keeps oily skin in check
My skin has a lot of natural oil, and this summer’s heat made it worse. My foundation would stay matte for only a few hours, and selfies were not possible without pausing to powder my face. That was before I found The Face Shop’s Clean Face Oil Control Essence. This light but moisturizing serum keeps oily skin feeling fresh and clean all day. After waking up and washing my face, it’s the first thing I put on, targeting my T-zone. After primer, foundation and powder, my face is oil-free for a good eight hours (at least)!
For all who suffer from makeup meltdowns or breakouts, this serum is worth a try. It might seem pricey at $15 for a 1.35-ounce bottle, but only a pea-size amount is required per application, so it lasts a while. The Face Shop has locations in Ward Warehouse, Waimalu Plaza and McCully Shopping Center.

Aromatherapy to sniff or nibble
Lavender is by far one of my favorite scents. The floral aroma helps me relax and get a better night’s rest, and takes the edge off headaches. But the loose organic lavender at Chai Studio, in Ward Warehouse, doesn’t just smell pretty; it can also be consumed — to enhance tea or lemonade, or even to sprinkle on cupcakes or roasted potatoes. It costs $3 per scoop.
