Triple Crown winner works at Del Mar; next race undecided
American Pharoah had his first workout since winning the Haskell Invitational two weeks ago, but no decision has been made about which race is next for the Triple Crown winner.
Under the watchful eyes of trainer Bob Baffert, American Pharoah was timed for four furlongs in 47.60 seconds, according to Equibase, and covered five furlongs in 1:00.13 on Sunday morning at Del Mar in Southern California.
While the Travers at Saratoga Race Course on Aug. 29 seems to be the favorite for the colt’s next start, Baffert says a decision won’t be made until another workout scheduled for next weekend. Baffert tells the Daily Racing Form, "Then, we’ll decide what to do."
If all goes according to plan, American Pharoah will close out his career in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31.
