A 73-year-old man was fatally injured Wednesday afternoon when his car crashed into a tree in Kapolei, police and Emergency Medical Services said.
Police said the driver was trying to pass another vehicle on Kapolei Parkway about 2 p.m. when it clipped the mirror of the other vehicle and swerved, hitting the curb of the median. The car continued on and crashed into the tree in the median, police said.
The crash occurred near Kapolei Parkway and Kinoiki Street, police said. The man was pinned in the vehicle, EMS said.
The man was taken by ambulance in critical condition to a hospital where he later died, police said. The driver of the other vehicle, a man in his 60s, was not injured in the accident, police said.
Police closed eastbound Kapolei Parkway between Kamaaha Avenue and Kualakai Parkway for about 1-1/2 hours.
Unconscious man is plucked from water in Waikiki
A man in his 60s was pulled from the water in Waikiki on Wednesday and taken by paramedics to the hospital in critical condition.
Emergency Medical Services said the incident was reported at 7:30 a.m. on the beach fronting Kalakaua and Liliuokalani avenues before lifeguards reported to work. The victim was unconscious when he was taken to the hospital, EMS said.

Fire destroys Kona garage
Hawaii County fire officials are investigating what caused a blaze that destroyed a wood-frame garage Tuesday in Kailua- Kona.
The fire was reported at 10:58 p.m. at Awalua Place. No one was injured.
It was brought under control at 11:20 p.m.
Damage is estimated at $100,000.
Woman who fell out of car ID’d
A Kailua-Kona woman who died from injuries after falling out of the passenger side of a car she was riding in Monday has been identified as Keri Flores, 31.
Police, who responded to a call at 7:41 p.m. Monday, said Flores was a passenger in a 2015 Nissan Sentra headed east on Manawalea Street when she fell out.
Flores was taken to Kona Community Hospital and later flown to the Queen’s Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 7:39 a.m. Tuesday.
