Kihei man rescued after falls plunge
Maui firefighters rescued a 43-year-old man Saturday after he fell about 70 feet off a waterfall a day earlier on Commando Trail.
A Maui Fire Department spokesman said firefighters picked up the Kihei man in a helicopter and took him to paramedics near the Hana Highway trailhead.
He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
Firefighters received a call about the incident shortly after 7 p.m. Friday when a woman reported friends overdue from a hike on Commando Trail.
Firefighters later discovered the man went hiking alone and found him about 9 p.m. at the bottom of a 150-foot waterfall. The man told firefighters he had been climbing down the waterfall when he slipped and fell.
He hit a rock outcropping on the way down, likely causing him to bounce outward and land in a pond, missing some rocks below, firefighters said.
The man crawled back up onto the rocks, but he couldn’t walk on his own and didn’t have a cellphone.
Firefighters scrambled down a dangerous ravine to reach the man, then treated him for his injuries and gave him dry clothes and water.
But firefighters had to wait until daylight to rescue the man because it was too muddy to carry him out at night.
One firefighter stayed with the victim overnight.
