Hawaii’s Carissa Moore, Tatiana Weston-Webb and Alessa Quizon advanced to the third round of the Swatch Women’s Pro on Thursday at Trestles, Calif.
Moore won her first-round heat by posting a day’s best 18.36 and Weston-Webb claimed her first-round heat with a 15.00. Both surfers advanced directly to the third round with their victories. Quizon placed third (15.33) in the opening round and beat Brazil’s Silvana Lima 14.73 to 13.87 in the second.
Moore and Quizon will surf in the same third-round heat.
Hawaii’s Malia Manuel, Coco Ho and Bethany Hamilton were eliminated in the second round.
In the Hurley Pro, also at Trestles, both Hawaii surfers who were able to compete — Dusty Payne and John John Florence — were eliminated in the second round.
Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz and Keanu Asing still need to surf in their second-round heats.
Hilo women play to 0-0 draw in debut
The University of Hawaii Hilo women’s soccer team played to a 0-0 draw in its season debut Thursday against Simon Fraser at Hilo.
The Vulcans’ Jenna Hufford made 18 saves, while Priya Sandhu had two for the Clan (1-0-1).
The match went 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime sessions.
HPU volleyball loses marathon
Pomai Recca had 26 kills, Elizabeth Culpepper added 20 and Tenika Wentworth finished with 55 assists, but the Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team fell to Simon Fraser 39-37, 25-16, 21-25, 32-34, 15-11 on Thursday in the PacWest/GNAC Crossover Tournament at Seattle.
The Sharks fell to 2-3, while the Clan improved to 3-2.
BYUH swept by Northwest Nazarene
Ying Chun Chen had 28 assists and Elizabeth Solaita contributed 15 digs, but the Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s volleyball team lost to Northwest Nazarene 25-23, 25-16, 25-11 on Thursday in the PacWest/GNAC Crossover Tournament at Ellensburg, Wash.
The Seasiders dropped to 2-3, while the Crusaders improved to 2-3.
