No tsunami threat to Hawaii from strong quake off Solomon Isles

A strong earthquake struck off the Solomon Island Wednesday morning but does not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

A preliminary magnitude 6.4 quake struck 112 miles southeast of Gizo, Solomon Islands at 8:49 a.m. Hawaii time at a depth of 3.1 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was not expected, and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

No injuries were immediately reported.
