Electricians Hawaii completed an unbeaten run through the 2015 Hawaii College Basketball Summer League with a 75-68 defeat of Wealth Strategy Partners on Saturday night at Maryknoll’s gym.
Artie Wilson, coach of Electricians (12-0), estimated it had been about 15 years since one of his teams went unbeaten.
Rickey Clayborn, a Chaminade alumnus, was named MVP of the title game after scoring 18 points, including some big baskets in the game’s final moments.
Wealth rallied late in the game to trim a 14-point deficit. Former University of Hawaii forward Julian Sensley hit a 3 to make it 68-65 with under two minutes left.
Clayborn got a putback to put the Electricians up 70-67, then scored on a leak-out to make it a five-point game with 30 seconds left.
William Broadus hit a free throw for Wealth, but Clayborn went 1-for-2 at the line at the other end and Sensley was off on a contested 3-pointer.
Wealth forced a five-second inbounds violation, but they turned it back over with seven seconds left.
Leon Ballard of Clark Hatch Fitness and Chris Summers of National Fire Protection were named co-MVPs of the regular season.
Pearl City reaches Juniors semifinals
Carter Hirano allowed one run in 3 2/3 innings and finished with two RBIs as Pearl City advanced to the semifinals of the Little League Junior Division Western Regional with a 4-2 win over Nevada on Saturday at Vancouver, Wash.
Norman Maldonado and Chaesten Chon finished on the mound for Pearl City, which improved to 4-0 in the tournament while outscoring its opponents 51-4.
Pearl City will play the runner-up of the other pool on Tuesday.
Reardon to speak at Honolulu QB Club
Honolulu Star-Advertiser columnist Dave Reardon and Leahi 050 soccer team members Laurie Baker and Kathy Carey will be the featured speakers at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club.
Reardon will talk about the University of Hawaii football team.
Last month, the Leahi 050 soccer team won a national championship at the United States Adult Soccer Association Veteran’s Cup in Virginia Beach, Va.
The meeting is at the Maple Garden Restaurant, with the luncheon starting at 11:30 a.m. and the program at noon.
Maui Mustangs eliminated
Maui was eliminated from the P.O.N.Y. Mustang (10-U) World Series after a 12-2 loss to Corpus Christi, Texas, on Saturday at Youngsville, La.
Levi Maddela batted 2-for-3 with a solo homer and Ethan "Yasu" Tokishi batted 2-for-2 with a double.
Earlier in the day, Maui beat Cucapah San Luis Colorado, Mexico, 8-6.
Maui’s Maddela went 2-for-2 with a pair of two-run homers, Kuhio Aloy batted 3-for-3 with a double and home run and Christopher Mata went 2-for-3.
On Friday, Maui beat Corpus Christi 7-6. Zach Dando batted 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Maddela went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for Maui.
