It appears the H-2 freeway has become the recruiting pipeline for the University of Hawaii football team.
Netane Muti, a two-way lineman from Leilehua High School, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he has accepted a football scholarship from the Rainbow Warriors.
Muti joins Mililani High quarterback McKenzie Milton and wideout Kalakaua Timoteo as oral commitments for the Warriors’ 2016 recruiting class.
"I wanted to keep Hawaii, Hawaii," Muti said of his decision.
Muti is 6 feet 4 and 280 pounds. He projects to play defensive tackle in college.
Muti and his family moved from Tonga to Wahiawa in 2008. But there was a mistake during the school registration, and Muti and his older brother were enrolled inadvertently in higher grades. Muti’s brother graduated when he was 16. Muti, a senior, turns 17 in March.
Muti, who had a growth spurt as a freshman, actually performed at Hugh Yoshida Stadium before he joined Leilehua’s football team as a sophomore. As a freshman, Muti played the snare drum in Leilehua’s marching band.
"I always wanted to be a football player," Muti said.
Muti developed into a menacing defensive lineman, drawing praise from Mililani coach Rod York following a scrimmage between the teams.
Offense shines in first week
The Warriors finished their first week of training camp with another strong performance from the offense.
The emphasis was on tempo. The Warriors used two huddles during the 7-on-7 drill, and then ran 32 plays in 10 minutes during the 11-on-11 session.
Starting quarterback Max Wittek was 8-for-11 during the 11-on-11 session.
"He has an NFL arm," said head coach Norm Chow, who has coached quarterbacks Jim McMahon, Ty Detmer, Steve Young, Philip Rivers, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Matt Cassel and Vince Young. "I know something about NFL arms."
On a third-and-8 play, Wittek dropped a short-hopped snap, picked up the football, then fired to wideout Marcus Kemp for the first down.
"These are the things you have to get used to," Wittek said. "Stuff happens. You have to get comfortable being uncomfortable. It’s not going to be a perfect snap every time. Sometimes it’s going to be a high heater. Sometimes it’s going to roll to you. If we can make (up for broken plays), we’ll be in good shape."
Sunday day of rest
After four practices last week, the Warriors will have a day off on Sunday. They resume practicing on Monday afternoon.
Except for center Brenden Urban, who is expected to recover from a knee injury in time for the season opener, the Warriors completed the first week relatively healthy.
"We have to stay healthy until Sept. 3," Wittek said. "We need everybody. This is a team. We have a team bond here. It’s a testament we’re out here in this heat and we still like each other. I think we’re going in the right direction."
