It’s not time yet to breathe a big sigh of relief about the weather — but perhaps we’re allowed a small sigh with Guillermo downsized from a hurricane earlier this week.
An updated forecast was for Tropical Depression Guillermo to bring some high winds, surf and rain Friday morning, but it was looking like the Hawaiian chain dodged the worst. If anything, rain would be welcome over the Wahiawa area, where a huge brush fire has been burning since Saturday. More than 500 acres have been charred and several schools were closed for a day.
Still, keep those emergency supplies handy: Forecasters already are watching Tropical Storm Hilda, the 10th East Pacific storm this hurricane season. While it’s too early to say what impact Hilda might have on Hawaii, we’ll know better a week from now.
‘Nice to haves’ don’t come free
Does every good thing in life have to become a mandate? It appears the City Council has jumped on this particular bandwagon, this week passing an ordinance requiring diaper-changing stations in any new or significantly renovated commercial and business space.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell has favored this idea, so the legislation seems likely to be enacted.
The stations are a godsend to anyone caring for infants and toddlers, there’s no doubt. But they’re a “nice to have,” an amenity that a family-oriented business could provide as a benefit to customers — both actual and potential.
Businesses have a hard enough time making expenses without being mandated to add on one more.
