HILO >> Hawaii County has called for restoration of a lava-covered road in Pahoa, despite the site having become a popular attraction for tourists.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports that work on the Cemetery Road has been put out to bid and is expected to start in coming months.

Lava crossed the road on Oct. 25 as it stormed through Pahoa and began threatening homes.

The county opened the location up for viewing after the lava flow from Kilauea’s Puu Oo vent became inactive in Pahoa in March.

Project engineer, Casey Yanagihara, says about 3,500 cubic yards of rock will need to be removed before the road can be repaved.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is covering 75 percent of the project’s cost, which is estimated at $200,000.
