Mariel Galdiano carded her second straight round of 1-under-par 70 to climb into a tie for fourth place at the Junior PGA Championship on Tuesday in Bryan, Texas.
Galdiano, an incoming senior at Punahou, moved to 2 under for the tournament and trails leader Yujeong Son by three shots midway through the event at Miramar Country Club. Kaiser sophomore Malia Nam is tied for 19th at 4 over after her round of 75.
In the boys championship, Moanalua senior Kyosuke Hara shot a 76 and enters Wednesday’s play tied for 38th at 8 over.
HPU hires Sgambati
Hawaii Pacific University hired Jacquelyn Sgambati as its new men’s and women’s cross country head coach.
Sgambati was recently an assistant cross country and track coach at Coastal Carolina and has 16 years of coaching experience at the Division I level. In 2000, she started the women’s track and field program at Elon, her alma mater. She’s also taught exercise sport science, physical education and nutrition classes at Coastal Carolina.
UH Hilo’s Kurokawa earns pitching honor
Hawaii Hilo junior Jordan Kurokawa was named the Golden State Collegiate Baseball League’s Pitcher of the Year.
The Maryknoll grad led the league with a 7-0 record and his 2.64 ERA ranked second in the league. He struck out 47 batters in 47.2 innings and his Top Speed team won the league championship. Kurokawa was 5-0 over his last six starts.
