A pedestrian crossed the Karsten Thot Bridge on Monday at the north end of Wahiawa. The bridge is scheduled to be closed for six weeks of repairs.

Work begins Monday on a $7.9 million repair project on the Karsten Thot Bridge in Wahiawa, the state Department of Transportation announced in a news release.

The project may require lane closures or even the full closure of the Kamehameha Highway bridge at night between 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. until the project is completed in April of next year.

The project is expected to prolong the life of the bridge and improve safety for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians.

The steel truss bridge was last repaired in 2012. This project will repair corroded structural steel, walkways and guard railings. The bridge willalso be repainted.

Work during the day — from about 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. — will not require lane closures. During work hours, the height clearance for the bridge will be lowered from 14 feet 4 inches to 12 feet until approximately the end of the year.

For more information, motorists can visit the project website at www.rrkarstenthot.com or call the project hotline at (808) 518-4576. Lane closure information will also be available on the HDOT website at hidot.hawaii.gov and released through the DOT’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
