You’re in motion from the moment the alarm bleats to the blessed hour when you finally tumble into a sweaty sleep, but it still feels like you don’t get enough done to get ahead. The daily to-do list for an average working parent is probably something like:
» Drive sleepy children to school while they consume "mobile breakfast."
» Pray that the ZipMobile is zipping today.
» Try to sneak in phone calls to dentist, doctor, plumber and elderly parents while filling out a report on how many reports your department has to fill out.
» Get the kids to various after-school activities in the hope of rounding out their little resumes so they can get scholarships to good schools.
» Crank out 50 units of a craft project to sell at school bazaar so your kids can go on field trips.
But on top of all of that, we’re also supposed to:
» Pay more for rail.
» Solve the homeless crisis.
» Be mad about stuff that didn’t bother us in the past, like gluten, GMO crops and cane burning.
» Not be mad about stuff that did bother us in the past, like beaches that are too dangerous because of drugs and thugs, and gargantuan glass high-rises built for the mega-rich.
The pressure is enough to make you fantasize about, even envy, other people’s daily routines. What’s the to-do list for recent neighbor island residents with active imaginations and time on their hands?
» Morning surf session.
» Show new $3 million listing to potential buyer from California.
» Call in to radio talk show to explain what Hawaiians really want.
» Raise hell about cane smoke.
» Stop by favorite vape shop to test new flavors.
» Update Etsy shop with pictures of "vintage old Hawaii" postcards.
What do you imagine the governor’s day is like?
» Mumble a self-congratulatory speech about renewable energy and the value of slow progress.
» Remind people that he’s an engineer, not a movie actor. Or a speech-giver. Or a career politician — oh wait, he is.
» Consider forming a task force to evaluate all current task forces.
» Attend evening event and post shaka selfies on Twitter.
What’s the daily list for Hawaii lawmakers?
» Send press release expressing support for something noncontroversial and low-impact, like mandatory diaper-changing stations.
» Work on guest list for birthday fundraiser.
» Duck constituent calls asking about your support for the extended rail tax and what you’re doing about the Kakaako Shanty Town.
» Have drinks with Billy Kenoi.
» Have dinner with Kakaako luxury condo developer in Kakaako luxury condo. Dinner conversation topic: What average Hawaii working people want.
