Kaiser raises the rent on Kalani every year.
The Cougars won the 38th meeting between the schools that share the same home field, blowing out the Falcons 62-20 on Kaiser’s field. Kaiser beat Kalani by 40 last year and hasn’t lost to the Falcons since 1999.
"We’ve been struggling on offense and we wanted to establish an identity," Kaiser coach Rich Miano said. "When all three phases are working well, something like this can happen."
Every phase of the game certainly worked for the Cougars, who got scores on a punt return, kickoff return, interception return, five rushes and one pass.
Thomas Leong broke the plane three times, and Fitou Fisiiahi matched him. Leong opened the scoring for Kaiser with a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown after Kalani’s first offensive series.
"I just saw the hole on the right side and broke it off," Leong said. "That’s about it; I just saw it and hit it hard."
The rest of his teammates did, as well.
Kahoalii Karratti led the way as the quarterback, hitting on 12 of his 16 passes for 120 yards to seven different receivers, and Leong led the ground attack with 89 yards. Leong fumbled to end Kaiser’s first series, but everything after that worked perfectly. Fitou Fisiiahi followed Leong’s punt return with a pair of touchdown runs and the rout was on. Fisiiahi got his third rushing touchdown late in the game when Kaiser went for it on fourth and 1 from Kalani’s 40. Fisiiahi ran up the middle untouched for the score to make it 48-6.
But don’t accuse Miano of running it up on Kalani coordinators Ron and Cal Lee. It is the last thing the Kaiser coach wanted to do.
He wore a pained expression while walking through the postgame handshake line, trying to keep his eyes off the big number his boys put on the scoreboard.
"I’m not saying this to patronize the Lee brothers, but what they do offensively, they are going to win a lot of games," Miano said. "(QB Noah Brum) spins the ball real well and they have some receivers, they are not far off from being a good team. Those are my lifelong friends and I respect them."
