2 bodies found in remains of house fire
Hawaii County police and firefighters are investigating a Hilo house fire Thursday morning after which they found the bodies of two people in the rubble.
Firefighters responded to an alarm at 1:08 a.m. at 917 Wainaku Ave. and found the house fully engulfed in flames with the roof partially collapsed. They brought the fire under control at 1:25 a.m. and extinguished it by 2 a.m.
Firefighters found two bodies in the home. No other details were available on the identities or gender of the victims.
Damage was estimated at $150,000. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
Home destroyed by early-morning blaze
Fire investigators are investigating the cause of an early-morning fire Thursday that destroyed a house in Pupukea and displaced nine people.
The fire caused an estimated $250,000 in damage to the structure, $50,000 to its contents and $70,000 to two passenger vehicles, a truck and a motorcycle, said fire Capt. Terry Seelig. The fire started in a second-floor bedroom, he said. No one was injured.
The fire was reported at 12:10 a.m. It took 35 firefighters 30 minutes to get the blaze at 59-542 Alapio Road under control at 12:46 a.m. The American Red Cross is helping the displaced occupants.
Man sought in stabbing, robbery attempt
Police are looking for a man who allegedly stabbed a 58-year-old man Thursday afternoon during an attempted robbery in the Ala Moana area.
Police said the suspect approached the victim on the promenade behind the Hawai‘i Convention Center at 12:17 p.m. and allegedly demanded money. When the victim refused, the suspect allegedly stabbed him with a deadly weapon and fled, police said.
The 58-year-old was in serious condition with a stab wound, Emergency Medical Services officials said.
Pair of drownings strikes Oahu beaches
Two men apparently drowned Thursday in separate incidents on Oahu.
Police said an unidentified man died in an apparent drowning near the Turtle Bay Resort. Police said the man, who was in his 40s to 50s, was found floating in the ocean at about 5:25 p.m.
He was in extremely critical condition when he was transported at 5:30 p.m. to a hospital, where he died, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.
Police said a 76-year-old man apparently drowned at Hanauma Bay. Police got the call at about 11 a.m. The man was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Woman injured by motorcycle
A 28-year-old Lahaina woman was in critical condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center on Thursday after she was hit by a motorcycle while crossing Honoapiilani Highway.
Both speed and alcohol are suspected in the 1:46 a.m. accident, which involved a 46-year-old Lahaina man who was driving the 2006 Kawasaki ZX 14 motorcycle. The man also is hospitalized at Maui Memorial, with a broken right arm.
Police said the motorcyclist was headed south on Honoapiilani Highway when he hit the victim as she crossed the highway at Hoohui Road. She was not in a crosswalk.
