Bareis’ student qualifies for ATP event
While other kids his age were competing for a USTA national championship last week, Mackenzie McDonald became the first unranked teen to qualify for an ATP Masters event.
McDonald, 18, from Piedmont, Calif., is coached by Rosie Bareis and ATP pro Wayne Ferreira. Bareis played for Kailua High School and University of Hawaii, and coached Hawaii Pacific before moving to California. She is currently Director of Tennis at the Club at Claremont, in Berkeley.
McDonald defeated 100th-ranked Steve Johnson, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, in the qualifier to earn a berth in this week’s Western & Southern Open. McDonald took out 77th-ranked Nicolas Mahut the day before. Earlier in the week, he lost in the Round of 16 at the USTA 18 Nationals in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Monday, McDonald fell to 86th-ranked David Goffin, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round of the Western & Southern. He had to pass on his $10,830 paycheck to remain eligible for his freshman year at UCLA this fall.
Saints eliminated from Cal Ripken WS
The Honolulu Saints’ run in the Cal Ripken Baseball 12/60 World Series ended Wednesday with an 8-2 loss to Kingsbridge, N.Y., in Hammond, Ind.
Dante Park tripled and drove in two runs for the Saints in the quarterfinal game. Honolulu finished tied for fifth in the World Series.
» Pearl City is scheduled to wrap up pool play in the Senior Little League World Series today against host Bangor, Maine. Pearl City (3-0) had a bye on Wednesday. The top two teams in each pool advance to Friday’s semifinals. The championship game is Saturday and will be televised on ESPNU.
