Nelson wins Aloha Section Senior PGA title
Kirk Nelson shot an even-par 72 to finish at 2-under 142 to win the Aloha Section Senior PGA Professional Championship at Poipu Bay Golf Course on Friday.
Nelson, a pro at Elleair Maui Golf Club in Kihei, advances to the 25th Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship on Oct. 10-13 at Virginia’s Creighton Farms and River Creek Club.
Honolulu’s Andrew Feldmann and Maui’s Brad Bowen both shot 150 for a second-place tie and will join Nelson in Virginia. The three local golfers will compete in a field of 264 for a total purse of $285,000.
Old South Marlin Club wins billfish
Old South Marlin Club East Coast 1 claimed the coveted Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament Governor’s Trophy on Friday with a final score of 1,488 points.
Angler C.J. Dugan reeled in a 588-pound Pacific blue marlin off Kailua-Kona to seal the win for Old South, scoring the biggest fish of the day and largest fish of the weeklong tournament.
Balboa Angling Club California placed second with 1,200 points and Australia’s Solitary Islands Game Fishing Club scored 1,150 points in third.
John Bagwell, captain of the 45-foot Silky, won the HIBT Henry Chee Award for the charter boat captain with the highest number of billfish points.
