Driver in fatal Big Island crash ID’d
Hawaii County police have identified the 36 year-old driver of the SUV who was killed when he hit a utility pole and a tree in Puna as Patrick W. Agcalon of Mountain View.
The identity of his male passenger, who also died at the scene Wednesday afternoon, is being withheld pending identification and notification of the next of kin.
Big Island police have initiated a negligent homicide and coroner’s inquest investigation. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death.
Police believe that speed and alcohol were both factors in this crash.
The passenger was wearing his seatbelt, but the driver was not.
Police said the 1999 Honda CR-V sport-utility vehicle driven by Agcalon was traveling east on North Glenwood Road when it ran off the roadway and struck a utility pole and a tree around 3:45 p.m.
