Local public radio jazz host Gordon dies

Longtime Hawaii Public Radio jazz programmer and evening jazz show host Don Gordon died Sunday afternoon.

HPR President and General Manager Michael Titterton informed Gordon’s former co-workers, in a memo, that Gordon died at 4:30 p.m. Sunday after suffering the latest in a series of heart attacks on Friday.

“Toward the end he was surrounded by a number of friends, neighbors and fans, including Bruce Hamada, Jimmy and Vicki Borges, and Governor Abercrombie (Jimmy sang, Neil didn’t),” Titterton wrote. “The Don went very peacefully, and cared for,” he said.

Gordon’s age was not included in the memo.

Gordon left the station in May after nearly 11 years of programming and hosting “Jazz with Don Gordon” on weeknight evenings, and was honored in a reception May 25 at Studio 909, home of the musicians’ union.

Funeral arrangements are pending, Titterton said.
