Maui crews save Hana Highway cottage threatened by brush fire
Maui firefighters Saturday put out a brush fire that threatened a cottage on the Hana Highway.
The half-acre blaze broke out just past 4 p.m. near mile marker 10.
Responding to the fire were an engine company from Paia and a tanker from Kahului, according to a Maui Fire Department news release.
The fire, mauka of the highway, came within inches of the cottage before being brought under control at 5:09 p.m., the department said.
The highway remained open as crews battled the blaze, which was extinguished at 6:02 p.m.
The cause was undetermined. It was uncertain if the cottage was occupied at the time of the fire.
