Florence ties for third in Fiji Pro
Hawaii’s John John Florence eliminated Jordy Smith in the quarterfinals of the Volcom Fiji Pro surf contest today in 6- to 10-foot waves at Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji.
Florence lost to 11-time world champion Kelly Slater, the event’s eventual winner, in the semifinals. Slater went on to beat Mick Fanning in the final. Florence placed equal third.
Kauai’s Sebastian Zietz bowed out in the quarterfinals to Slater in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour contest and finished equal fifth.
Corpuz in a tie for first in Rolex golf
After leading until the final round at last week’s AJGA event in Phoenix, Punahou sophomore Allisen Corpuz soared into first again Tuesday in the opening round of the Rolex Girls Junior Championship in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
Corpuz and co-leader Alison Lee, from Valencia, Calif., both shot 3-under-par 69s. Three players are one shot back.
