Firefighters from Kahului, Kihei and Wailuku extinguished a brush fire in the back of Kmart, off of Hana Highway in Kahului overnight, a Maui County Fire Department spokesman said.

About a half-acre of dry grass and thick shrubbery burned until the fire was called under control at 11:13 p.m. and extinguished just after midnight.

A Maui County Public Works tanker assisted firefighters in containing the blaze.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. No injuries or damages were reported.

Meanwhile, firefighters returned to the scene of a 65-acre fire in southeast Maui on the mauka side of Piilani Highway, on the Ulupalakua side of Manawainui Gulch this morning.

Maui firefighters have suspended their battle against the brush fire overnight due to hazardous terrain.

The fire was first reported at 3:07 p.m. and was considered 50 percent contained by 8 p.m.

At about 6:30 a.m., the fire was about 80 percent contained and had diminished in intensity since Saturday night, a spokesman said.

Two helicopters, 2 Fire Department tankers, 2 Public Works tankers, and an engine company  from Kula battled the fire this morning.

No structures are threatened.

The fire, located on the mauka side of Piilani Highway, on the Ulupalakua side of Manawainui Gulch, was first reported at 3:07 p.m. and was considered 50 percent contained by 8 p.m.

Crews will monitor the area overnight.

The brushfire did not grow overnight, remaining relatively the same size. The fire did darken down significantly and is approximately 80% contained. 2 helicopters, 2 MFD Tankers, 2 Public Works Tankers, and E-13 from Kula are currently on scene.
