Dump truck joyride spurs police chase through Waikiki
A 43-year-old man was in police custody Sunday after he allegedly stole a dump truck and drove around Waikiki, hitting two marked Honolulu police cars before he tried to escape into the ocean.
Police officers plucked the suspect from the sea early Sunday morning after he treaded water for more than an hour.
Police said the man, who has no local address, got into the empty Kailua Construction Co. truck on Kapahulu Avenue near Monsarrat Avenue at about 11:48 p.m. Saturday. He found the keys and briefly drove around Waikiki, hitting two police cars in pursuit.
The suspect then drove onto the sidewalk of Kalakaua Avenue, swiping trees, before he abandoned the truck on the shoreline in front of the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, witnesses and police said.
Police said he was spotted treading water near the Kapahulu Groin pedestrian walkway.
A Honolulu Fire Department helicopter arrived at about 12:40 a.m. with a spotlight to search the ocean. Police found the man and arrested him at about 1:30 a.m. on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree reckless endangerment and two counts of first-degree criminal property damage.
