Governor signs emergency proclamation ahead of storm

Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Wednesday signed an emergency proclamation for the entire state, effective through Oct. 24, in anticipation of the arrival of Tropical Storm Ana, a governor’s spokesman said.

The storm is expected to become a hurricane later Wednesday and should strengthen through Friday.

Forecasters expect it to pass south or skirt the southern edge of the Big Island on Sunday and hit Oahu and Kauai by Sunday and Monday with hurricane force winds of 75 to 90 mph.

Governor’s spokesman Justin Fujioka said the proclamation covers such items as access to the major disaster fund to cover staff overtime and other expenses, allowing emergency procurement of needed supplies and resources, as well as activation of the National Guard, if needed.
