Facebook CEO buys 700 acres on Kauai
It’s not a deal as big or pricey as the island of Lanai, but another tech industry billionaire appears to have plunked down nine figures for real estate in Hawaii.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has paid more than $100 million for about 700 acres on Kauai, according to Forbes Magazine.
Forbes reported that Zuckerberg recently bought about 350 acres bordering Pilaa Beach on Kauai’s North Shore from a company owned by retired car dealer James Pflueger, and an adjacent area of roughly 350 acres from California firm Falko Partners.
Forbes said Zuckerberg plans to create a secluded family sanctuary on the property.
The magazine ranks Zuckerberg as the 11th-richest person in America with a net worth of $32 billion. That’s eight places and $16 billion behind Larry Ellison, the co-founder of Oracle Corp. who bought Lanai two years ago for about $300 million.
Ex-HECO chief to get $551K as consultant
Former Hawaiian Electric Co. President and CEO Dick Rosenblum, who resigned his position at the end of last month, will receive $551,000 in salary and bonus as a consultant after his formal retirement Jan. 5.
Rosenblum will serve as special adviser to Chairwoman Connie Lau and will continue to receive his existing base salary and benefits until his retirement after reaching an agreement to remain with the company as an employee until that date, according to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Rosenblum will then serve as a consultant from Jan. 6 through July 5. He will receive compensation of $315,000 — the prorated amount of his 2014 base salary — for the six-month period to be paid monthly, as well as certain health insurance benefits for a portion of the time. He also will receive a bonus of $236,000 at the end of the six-month period. His unvested restricted stock units will continue to vest until July 5.
Former HECO Executive Vice President Alan Oshima took over as president and CEO on Oct. 1.

Tropic Water opens first water store on Oahu
Tropic Water has opened Oahu’s first retail water store in Iwilei. The store has a 17-foot-long stainless-steel self-serve bottled-water fill table where customers can rinse and fill their own water bottles with purified drinking water. The Tropic Water fill-your-own concept enables customers to save money while being more environmentally friendly than if they had purchased single-use bottled water.
This store is the first of its kind on Oahu but is modeled after Tropic Water’s store in Lahaina, Maui. The Oahu store is at 1150 N. Nimitz Highway just behind the Nimitz Center and can be accessed from both Alakawa Street and Nimitz Highway.
In addition to self-serve fill stations and 24-hour vending machines, Tropic Water is Oahu’s 3M Authorized Water Dealer selling and servicing the complete line of 3M Purification water filters for residential and commercial applications.
Store hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. A grand opening is planned for the first week of November.
