Girl, 4, died after being trapped in car
WAILUKU » Maui police say a 4-year-old girl died after being found in a locked car with all inside door handles missing.
Police identified the girl as Kaiohu Kapu. She was found last month in the car outside a Lahaina apartment complex.
The Maui News reported Thursday that one of her parents found her lying face down on the floor of the car’s back seat.
Police say Kaiohu and her family came back from a trip to the beach, and she took a nap with a parent.
The parent told police the girl woke up and likely went to the car to get her blanket.
She was pronounced dead at a hospital. A final autopsy report is pending.
Police say the girl’s parent purchased the car with the inside handles already missing.
Body recovered from car that plunges 60 feet
Maui firefighters and lifeguards Thursday extricated a male of unknown age from a car that had gone off Honoapiilani Highway near DT Fleming Beach.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, Maui Fire Department spokesman Lee Mainaga said in an email.
The car had flipped over and fallen 60 feet into the shorebreak below in Kapalua, Mainaga said in the email.
A resident showed fire crews an area overlooking a small bay just north of DT Fleming Beach where the car had gone off.
Ocean Safety’s rescue watercraft and two fire personnel removed the victim from the car and transported him to an area just north of the site.
