Hilo’s Brad Tavares was knocked out in 44 seconds by Australian Robert Whittaker in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Adelaide, Australia.
Tavares (13-5, 8-4), who was ranked No. 14 at middleweight, lost for the third time in his last four fights.
Ewa Beach’s Kailin Curran (3-2) fell to 0-2 in the UFC when she lost to Australian Alex Chambers (5-2, 1-1) by submission at 3:15 of the third round in a preliminary fight.
Curran had landed 123 strikes to Chambers’ 53, according to fight metrics, before she got caught in the final two minutes.
Kahuku places second in Pacific Cup rugby
The Kahuku Red Raiders Rugby Club fell to the top-ranked Danville (Calif.) Oaks 8-5 in Saturday’s championship game of the Pacific Cup High School Rugby Invitational Tournament in San Diego.
Sione Uasi’s try was the only score for unranked Kahuku against the No. 1 team in the country in goffrugbyreport.com. The Red Raiders advanced to the championship after a 53-0 rout of No. 4 Back Bay from Newport Beach, Calif.
The Red Raiders retained their Hawaii state high school club title last month, capping the tournament with a 36-0 victory over the Kalihi Raiders, to earn a spot in the Pacific Cup.
Kahuku is coached by Seamus Fitzgerald.
Tinman Triathlon registration open
Registration is open for the 35th Tinman Triathlon scheduled for July 26 in Waikiki.
The event consists of a 750-meter swim, a 40-mile bike ride and 10K run. The first swim wave off Queen’s Beach is set for 5:30 a.m.
The bike and run legs begin and end at Kapiolani Park. Competitors must be at least 15 years old on race day.
The entry fee through May 30 is $105 for individuals and $135 per three-person relay team. Fees increase through July 21.

Kaiser track and field will be at QB Club
Kaiser High School track and field coach Kevin Kruszona and the Cougars’ girls 4×400 relay team will be the guest speakers at the Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon Monday at the Maple Garden Restaurant.
Kaiser’s relay of Tommi Hintnaus, Celine Lum, Kristen O’Handley and Teuila Gardner broke the Oahu Interscholastic Association meet record with a time of 4:00.43. Gardner also won the high jump and the 800 meters, O’Handley claimed the 400 meters and Lum captured the pole vault at the meet.
The state championship is this week on Maui.
Kruszona also is the president of the Hawaii Masters Track Club.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon. The luncheon cost is $15 per person.
