Lenny, Schweitzer ace SUP race
Maui’s Kai Lenny took the overall title of the Stand Up World Series Finals at Turtle Bay on Monday, winning Sunday’s long-distance race and finishing second by inches in Monday’s sprint race for his second overall title of the season.
The victory gives Lenny a second-place finish in the World Series rankings, just behind Maui’s Connor Baxter, who clinched the overall title last month in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Monday’s sprint race came down to a photo finish, as half of the eight-man final heat jumped on the same wave into the inside buoy. Lenny and Maui’s Zane Schweitzer battled stroke for stroke to the finish, with video replay showing that Schweitzer’s board crossed the line first by inches.
Schweitzer, who won the European Cup earlier this season, finished fifth in the overall world rankings. Haleiwa’s Mo Freitas, 17, took third in both the distance and sprints to finish second overall at the Turtle Bay and third behind Baxter and Lenny in the world rankings.
Riggs Napoleon of Honolulu, also 17, was second in the sprints and finished fifth overall at the Turtle Bay finale.
