No tsunami threat to Hawaii from large quake off Central America

A large earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Central America but did not generate a tsunami that threatens the Hawaiian islands, officials at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Monday evening.

The quake, with a magnitude of 7.4, struck at 5:51 p.m. Hawaii time and was centered about 40 miles south of Intipuca, El Salvador, at a depth of about nearly 44 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Officials at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu said that based on historical earthquake and tsunami data there was no threat of a widespread Pacific tsunami. They said hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 300 kilometers (186 miles) of the epicenter along the coasts of Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador, but the threat had passed within an hour of the quake.

Local reports indicate the quake was felt throughout Central America, but there are no immediate reports on injuries or damage.
