Magnitude 4.0 earthquake felt on Big Island
A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck in the Kau area of Hawaii island Sunday evening.
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reports the earthquake struck at at 6:43 p.m., about seven miles north of Naalehu at a depth of 3.4 mi.
The USGS “Did you feel it?” Web site received around 20 felt reports, mostly from the Naalehu area, within an hour of the earthquake. Only weak shaking was reported around the epicenter.
Over the past 50 years, the area north of Naalehu has experienced seven other earthquake, with magnitudes greater than 4.0.
