Fire in Halawa apartment sends 3 women to hospital

Oahu firefighters responded to two fires Thursday night, including a fire in a Halawa apartment that sent three women to the hospital. 

Paramedics took a 45-year-old woman to the hospital in critical condition following the fire at the Puuwai-Momi apartments near Aloha Stadium.

Two girls, ages 17 and 13, were also hospitalized in stable condition, Emergency Medical Services reported.

Firefighters were called at about 11:48 p.m. to the fire in a second-floor apartment in building seven of the public housing project near Aloha Stadium.

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 12:11 a.m.

Investigators were still trying to estimate the damage and determine the cause of the apartment fire.

Earlier in the night, at  8:48 p.m. when smoke was reported coming from a jewelry store on Iwilei Road in the Dole Cannery Shipping Center.

Fire crews forced their way in and discovered the smoke was coming from an overheating oven used to melt metal that had been left on.
