TB tests to resume Monday at state clinics
The state Department of Health has an adequate supply of solution used for tuberculosis skin testing and will resume providing the tuberculin skin test at all state TB clinics statewide Monday.
People needing the test are encouraged to check with their provider.
In April a national shortage of purified protein derivative solution — Tubersol® and Aplisol® — prompted the state to issue a 120-day suspension of mandated tuberculosis clearance requirements for school personnel, students, food handlers and workers in health care, domiciliary care, day care and residential care facilities.
The temporary suspension of requirements for TB clearances expires Aug. 9. Students enrolling in postsecondary school for the first time in Hawaii may receive additional guidance directly from their university or college.
A list of state testing facilities and hours of operation are listed at the Department of Health’s website — hawaii.gov/health/family-child-health/contagious-disease/tb/index.html.
Pair of 442nd veterans get Bronze Stars
Two "Go for Broke" veterans in their 90s were belatedly recognized for their service in World War II.
Seichi Sakaida, 91, and Clarence Tamayori, 92, both served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated unit of mostly Japanese-Americans.
KHON reported that Hawaii Army National Guard Col. Roberts Lesher formally presented the men with Bronze Star medals Wednesday.
Tamayori says he enlisted because he felt it was his duty at the time. He says he was fighting for his country, the state of Hawaii and his family name.
The 442nd Regimental Combat Team is the most highly decorated military unit in U.S. history for its size and length of service.
