Pedestrian killed as car swerves to side
A 46-year-old male pedestrian was killed Wednesday afternoon in Kahului when a multipurpose vehicle swerved into the shoulder lane where he was walking, Maui police said in a news release.
Police said the accident occurred at 4:10 p.m. on Hana Highway, about a half-mile east of Hookele Street.
A black 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe was heading east on Hana Highway when it veered right onto the eastbound shoulder to avoid a vehicle in front of it that had slowed in traffic, police said. The man was walking toward Paia when he was struck. This is the third traffic fatality in Maui County for the year compared with 10 the same time last year.
