Search resumes for missing hiker off Hanauma Bay
Firefighters resumed a search Saturday for a second missing hiker in a remote area off Hanauma Bay after a man’s body was pulled from the water one day earlier.
Police said Noemi Alcotas was last seen about 7 a.m. Friday and her belongings were found several hours later along the trail on the south side of Hanauma Bay. Alcotas has a medical condition that requires daily medication, police said.
According to firefighters, a group of hikers discovered a pair of bags on a cliff near the Rock Bridge area and called 911 around 1 p.m. Responding fire rescue and Ocean Safety personnel searched the area and discovered a man’s body about 2:45 p.m.
Firefighters said the bag contained identification belonging to Jojo Acosta, 34, and the body matched the ID. One of the bags also contained Alcotas’ ID and she may also have been swept into the sea, officials said.
Darkness ended the search Friday, but Honolulu firefighters resumed their search about 6 a.m.
Saturday, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesperson Kevin Mokulehua. Lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard are assisting firefighters in the search.
