UC Davis captures Anuenue Classic
Andrea Wong finished 7-under-par to lift UC Davis over 14 other schools in the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at Kapalua’s Bay Golf Course on Wednesday.
The Aggies finished at 1-under par, eight strokes ahead of runner-up Texas.
Hawaii finished 11th in the tourney with a score of 922 and 58-over-par. Senior Raquel Ek led the Rainbow Wahine with a 223 after three rounds. UH’s Isabella Leung finished at 12-over-par with 228.
HPU softball splits with Holy Names
The Hawaii Pacific softball team started strong with an 11-3 win over Holy Names, but gave up an early lead in the nightcap to fall 9-7 on Wednesday at Oakland, Calif.
The Sharks (15-11, 7-9 PacWest) posted 10 runs in the first inning of Game 1, highlighted by Keila Elderts’ triple and Dorian Acierto’s inside the park home run.
HPU also held a 3-0 lead in Game 2, but gave up seven runs in the second inning to the Hawks (4-30, 3-17 PacWest).
Hawaii Hilo softball sweeps NDNU
The Hawaii Hilo softball team defeated Notre Dame de Namur 6-0 and 6-5 in a PacWest doubleheader on Wednesday in Belmont, Calif.
UHH’s Vanessa Salinas allowed just two hits in the shutout and struck out five batters. Shelby Vickers led the Vulcans (16-13, 11-8 PacWest) with two doubles.
The Argonauts (14-17, 9-7 PacWest) nearly stole the nightcap with a 4-0 lead, but the Vulcans busted out with six runs in the sixth inning to steal the victory.
Local gymnasts shine in Holland
Four local gymnasts from the Hawaii Trampoline and Tumbling Club placed in the top 50 in the 17-and-under open division at the 21st Aalsmeer Flower Cup in Holland from March 20-21.
Kaimuki’s Kayttie Nakamura, 12, placed 14th out of 75 at the international meet, trailed by 12-year-old Sydney Senter of Aiea, who finished in 19th place.
Manoa’s Maia Amano, 11, placed 27th overall in her first international meet and 12-year-old Alexander Paul of Salt Lake placed 44th.
CS Stanislaus routs Hilo women’s tennis
The Hawaii Hilo women’s tennis team fell 8-1 to Cal State Stanislaus on Wednesday in Turlock, Calif.
Chanelle Piliwale-Wilson earned the Vulcans’ lone win on the No. 4 singles court against Jessica Stokes 5-7, 6-4, 10-4.
Hawaii Hilo falls to 2-15 overall, while the Warriors improve to 3-7.
BYU-Hawaii tennis beats West Alabama
The No. 3 BYU-Hawaii women’s tennis team overwhelmed West Alabama 8-1 and the No. 18 men’s tennis team beat the Tigers 6-3 on Wednesday in Pensacola, Fla.
The Lady Seasiders clinched their seventh consecutive victory, capped by Karen Liu and Dallas Zhang’s 8-1 win on the doubles court.
On the men’s court, Wei-Feng Lee’s 6-3, 6-0 win over Casper Schuetze kept the Seasiders in the lead.
ITA names HPU men, Dallas Zhang No. 1
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named the Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis team No. 1 on Wednesday after toppling defending national champion West Florida on March 13. The Sharks are 13-0 this season and delivered West Florida’s first loss since May 2013.
BYU-Hawaii’s Dallas Zhang also received a top ranking in Division II women’s singles, as well as doubles with partner Karen Liu. The Lady Seasiders were named No. 3 overall and the HPU women’s team is ranked No. 7.
