Leung claims title at OSU invite
University of Hawaiisophomore Izzy Leung became the first Rainbow Wahine golfer to win a tournament in eight years when she finished atop the leaderboard at the Oregon State Invitational on Tuesday.
Leung carded a two-day total of 1-under-par 215 at the par-72 Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore., to finish three strokes ahead of Oregon State’s Anica Yoo. Leung’s win was UH’s first since Dale Gammie won the Heather Farr Memorial in 2006.
Leung entered Tuesday’s play one stroke out of the lead after shooting a career-best 67 followed by a 75 in Monday’s 36 holes. Her round of 73 on Tuesday was enough to overtake first-day leader Clare Sorensen of San Francisco and hold off Yoo.
UH finished seventh in the team standings in the 10-team event with a total of 910. Oregon State won the tournament at 879.
Portland State freshman and St. Francis graduate Hansol Koo tied for 13th at 223.
Zietz bounced from Trestles
Sebastian Zietz of Hawaii fell to Tiago Pires 16.93-12.74 in the second round of the Hurley Pro at Trestles in San Clemente, Calif., on Tuesday.
Zietz was the only Hawaii surfer in the round, but John John Florence and Fredrick Patacchia will surf in round three. Florence takes on C.J. Hobgood and Patacchia meets Owen Wright.
Coco Ho is the lone Hawaii surfer in the quarterfinals of the Swatch Women’s Pro Trestles and takes on Lakey Peterson.
