Merilas Rivera wasn’t having her best day, but she kept her chin up and her bat ready.
Known better as "Mama" to family and friends, Rivera came through with a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh as No. 2 Mililani rallied from a four-run deficit for a 6-5 win over No. 1 Campbell on Tuesday afternoon.
Mililani improved to 5-0 in the OIA West, handing Campbell (4-1) its first loss. The normally sure-handed Sabers committed four errors.
Rivera was hitless in three plate appearances before stepping to the plate in the seventh with Kristen Ishii standing at second base. Ishii had just delivered a game-tying double to right center that scored courtesy runner Misha Ferreira.
"I was just looking for solid contact to help my team out," said Rivera, who is named after her grandmother.
When Rivera was younger, her grandfather pronounced her name with an accent and it came out sounding like "Mama." The nickname has stuck
"A lot of people couldn’t pronounce my name," she said.
The Trojans showed plenty of unity and toughness after falling behind 4-0. Aubree Kim was resilient once again, overcoming a rough start for the complete-game win. She struck out five and walked four in the win, and retired 10 of 11 Sabers during a key stretch.
"I did get stronger," the junior ace said. "It’s my mentality. I really don’t like to lose. When I get behind like that, it gets more intense."
Facing one of the state’s most potent hitting attacks didn’t faze the seasoned hurler.
"The umpire’s strike zone was really tight today, so I tried to mix my curve outside and inside. Campbell’s such a good hitting team," Kim said.
Campbell coach Shag Hermosura wasn’t happy about his team’s lack of defensive execution, but he credited Kim for a smart performance.
"She made adjustments, changed her speed and hitting her spots," he said. "I can live with physical errors, but we made mental errors. We’ll go back and work on that. We’ll see Mililani again."
Shannon Pascua-Stanton led the Trojans, going 3-for-3 with a double and run-scoring single.
Kim ran into trouble in the top of the second inning when the visiting Sabers scored four runs.
Meanwhile, Campbell starting pitcher Elise Favela was overpowering at the start, striking out four of the first nine Trojans. Favela, who was also 2-for-3 at the plate, finished with six strikeouts and just one walk. She came into the game with a 2-0 mark and 19 strikeouts in 15-plus innings without a walk.
The Trojans finally scored in the fourth inning, benefiting from two Campbell infield errors. They got another in the fifth on a two-out double to right by Maya Yoshiura, and tied it at 4 with two runs in the sixth, aided by two more Campbell infield errors.
The Sabers tacked on a go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, but it was a crucial play by Mililani center fielder Brooke Yasuda that made a difference. Her throw home on the fly gunned down Darien Robinson, who tried to score from second base on a single by Chardonnay Pantastico.
Down 6-5, the Trojans never wavered.
"It means a lot for us. We’ve had a lot of close games," Mililani coach Rose Antonio said of her team’s fourth one-run victory. "We’re young and learning, climbing the ladder."
