Construction crews will replace about 10,000 square feet of concrete pavement on the H-1 freeway over the next two weeks, requiring closures of town-bound lanes starting Monday.
Two right lanes will be closed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., just east of the Aiea pedestrian overpass near Heleconia Place; then from 6 to 9 p.m. the work will close three right lanes. The state will close four right lanes from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.
The lane closures will continue until Thursday, the Prince Kuhio Day holiday. On Friday the work will close two right lanes from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
The construction work continues Monday through Thursday nights until April 2 with three left lanes closed from 6 until 9 p.m. and four lanes closed from 9 p.m. until 4 a.m.
The DOT is using a precast concrete slab system to reduce the time needed to replace the concrete and close lanes.
"Using pre-cast concrete panels will allow this repair work to be completed in two weeks versus the six weeks it would take with traditional concrete methods," said Ed Sniffen, DOT Highways Division deputy director, in a news release.
The work was scheduled to coincide with spring break for University of Hawaii campuses and many private schools.
The cost to repair the pavement is $1.4 million.
A 24-hour hotline has been established to answer questions and take comments from the public at 945-1144.
