Highs in low 80s, midweek rain forecast
The temperature in Honolulu hit 85 Sunday, tying a record high for the date. The temperature at the airport tied the record set in 2003.
The high Monday is expected to be 83 and will remain in that ballpark all week, the National Weather Service says.
But the weather will shift midweek as a front approaches from the northwest. Winds will become light, and the weather will become dry and hazy, the weather service says.
A band of showers along the trailing end of the front will reach Kauai on Tuesday night and move down to Hawaii island by Thursday, forecasters said. Strong tradewinds will spread over the islands behind the band. The showers and wind will subside by the weekend.
Work will close lanes on city roadways
Honolulu drivers can expect traffic delays throughout the week as scheduled lane closures will affect several main thoroughfares.
The Board of Water Supply’s ongoing upgrade project on Kapiolani Boulevard will continue between Paani and Isenberg streets between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each weekday except for Kuhio Day on Thursday. The left and center Diamond Head-bound lanes between Paani and Hoawa streets will be closed Monday.
The right and center lanes along the same stretch in the same direction will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday. On Friday the left and center Diamond Head-bound lanes from Paani to Isenberg streets will be closed.
Lane closures are also scheduled in both directions of Ala Moana Boulevard from Queen Street to Atkinson Drive from Monday through Wednesday and on Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for roadside reconstruction. The right lane on Ala Moana Boulevard eastbound will also be closed from Kahanamoku Street to Kalakaua Avenue, Monday through Wednesday and on Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., for sewer maintenance.
Man charged in arson case
A 60-year-old Ocean View man remained in custody Sunday after being charged with burning down his home on Hawaii island.
Martin Molina was charged with first-degree arson and first-degree criminal property damage Saturday. His bail was set at $75,000.
About 15 firefighters responded to a two-story structure fire on the south end of Hawaii island about 6 p.m. Friday and extinguished the blaze in about four hours.
The home, on Pineapple Parkway near Hukilau Drive, was destroyed. The Red Cross was called to assist.
Firefighters estimated the loss at $270,000.
Hawaii News Now quoted Molina’s stepson, Evan Prestriedge, as saying Molina and his mother got into a fight Friday night. After the fight he, his mother and his grandmother left, leaving Molina behind, he said. Later, he said, they got a call from police saying their house was a total loss.
Quake occurs off of Big Isle
A small earthquake occurred Saturday night in an unusual location about 50 miles southwest of Hawaii island.
The 3.0-magnitude quake occurred at 7:53 p.m. in an area called Day Seamount, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Loihi seamount, Hawaii’s youngest and still submerged volcano, is located to the southeast of Hawaii island and east of Saturday’s quake.
The tremblor originated 66 miles below Earth’s crust, 76 miles south of Kona and 109 miles southwest of Hilo, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
It was the largest of the 34 earthquakes around Hawaii in the past week.
