Hawaii left out of volleyball poll
A week off didn’t help the Hawaii volleyball team in either the national poll or the RPI, both of which were released Monday.
The Rainbow Wahine (12-5, 4-2 Big West) remained unranked for a second consecutive week in the AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25, receiving 16 points, one fewer than last week. It tied Hawaii with Central Florida in points.
The top eight teams stayed the same, led by Stanford (18-0), which received 55 first-place votes. Also unbeaten this season are No. 2 Texas (14-0, 4 votes), No. 3. Washington (19-0, 1 vote) and No. 4 Florida State (19-0).
Long Beach State (16-4, 6-0 Big West), which handed Hawaii its last loss — a five-setter on Oct. 11 — made its poll debut at No. 23.
In the Rating Percentage Index, Hawaii went from 25 to 29. The RPI is part of the formula used by the NCAA selection to seed the postseason tournament.
The Rainbow Wahine look to end their two-match losing streak when returning to the Stan Sheriff Center for Big West matches against Cal Poly at 7 p.m. Friday and UC Santa Barbara at 5 p.m. Sunday.
University of Hawaii sailors take second
The University of Hawaii Rainbows coed sailing team captured second, while the Rainbow Wahine team finished 10th at the 26th annual Stoney Burke Intersectional this past Saturday and Sunday in San Francisco.
The coed team, which won five straight regattas before this weekend’s runner-up finish, scored 75 points. UC Santa Barbara easily won the regatta with a 20-point total. Only 12 races (six each in the A and B divisions) were completed due to weather conditions. Chuck Eaton and Patrick Manuel helped UH to a third-place finish in the "A" division, while Giacomo Paoletti and Katrina Berry took UH to a division "B" finish of sixth place.
The Rainbow Wahine scored a total of 142 points in the two divisions. Cecilia Jansson and Louise Currie sailed to a 12th-place division "A" finish, while Caitlin Schadt and Maddie Anzivino recorded an 11th-place finish in division "B."
Up next for Hawaii is the PCCSC Men’s Women’s Singlehanded Championships and the PCCSC Women’s Fall Dinghy Championships, which begin this Friday in Stanford, Calif.
