The first in a series of public town hall meetings by Mayor Kirk Caldwell to discuss his Islandwide Housing Strategy takes place at Neil Blaisdell Center on Thursday.

The meeting will be held at Blaisdell’s Hawaii Suites 7 and 8 beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday. It will be broadcast live on ‘Olelo Channel 54.

Caldwell, Transit Oriented Development Administrator Harrison Rue and city Housing Director Jun Yang will provide details on the city’s new affordable housing plan, which calls for more stringent requirements of developers and home builders applying for building permits, a loosening of rules pertaining to accessory dwelling units (also known as ohana dwelling units) and new incentives for those who build along the city’s upcoming 20-mile rail line.

The goal of the strategy is to add 4,000 units to Oahu’s starved affordable housing category in five years.

The public is encouraged to attend, participate and offer suggestions at Thursday’s meeting on how the Caldwell administration can better serve the housing needs of Oahu residents. Future meetings have not yet been announced.
