Good people needed to ensure good government
Everyone wants accountable government; too few want to do the accounting. The state Ethics Commission has a vacancy to fill, and the state Campaign Spending Commission has two.
And because there aren’t yet enough candidates to fill the slots, the state has extended the deadline to March 31.
These panels do important work overseeing how campaign money is raised and spent, and over the professional behavior of lawmakers, lobbyists and state employees. But they can’t do it without a full roster.
There are good people out there with time and attention to offer. We hope they are the ones who will hear the call, and send resumes and three letters of recommendation to: Judicial Council, Hawaii Supreme Court, 417 S. King St., Second Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813-2902.
Obama home here more likely than Obama library
OK, so Hawaii might not even get table scraps in the fight over the presidential library, but one thing seems clear: Some version of the Barack Obama Western White House will remain in the islands.
Specifically, Waimanalo. The scuttlebutt is that the purchase of the $8.7 million oceanfront mansion that was the home setting for TV’s Ferrari-driving "Magnum, P.I." signals an ongoing Obama vacation presence is likely. That’s because the buyer is Obama buddy and Chicago businessman Marty Nesbitt, a frequent guest during the family Christmas vacations.
Incidentally, or maybe significantly, Nesbitt also chairs the board of the library foundation. Maybe this is Hawaii’s best shot at a piece of the library: Nesbitt will want a place to go to work while he’s here. Or not.
